What is kief.dev?

kief.dev is the developer tools arm of Kief Studio. We build free, no-signup-required tools for developers who care about security, productivity, and getting things done without switching tabs.

Our flagship product, Vekt, is a supply chain threat intelligence scanner that covers 22 lockfile formats across 12 package ecosystems. It started as a tool we built for ourselves after seeing one too many typosquatting attacks slip through npm audit.

Who builds this?

Brian and Meelie Gagne. Two people, family-owned and operated, no venture funding. We run Kief Studio out of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts -- operating as contractors together since 2012, formally incorporated in 2022. Not an agency. Not a consultant. Your tech team. We also run LTFI (AI and managed security) and kiefstud.io (creative and SMB services).

kief.dev is where we put the tools we wish existed. The security tools we use daily. The code utilities we got tired of Googling. The supply chain scanner we needed after auditing client infrastructure and finding the same preventable problems everywhere.

Our approach.

Free by default

Every tool works without signup. Vekt has a free tier with 50 scans/day. We make money when teams need more, not by gating basic functionality.

Security first

We practice what we preach. CSP headers, input sanitization, timing-safe comparisons, no telemetry without opt-in. Our browser extension only sends package name and version -- never browsing data.

Real services, not wrappers

Our DNS, SSL, and security header tools make actual network requests. Our lockfile scanner is a Rust binary querying OSV.dev in real time. No cached databases, no monthly snapshots.

No bloat

The Vekt CLI is 3.7MB. The browser extension content script is 12KB. The LSP server is 4.4MB. We write Rust where performance matters and TypeScript where developer experience matters.
